Assessing Fish Passage at Stream Crossings in the Coeur d’Alene Basin

This project will take place within the St. Joe River and North Fork Coeur d’Alene River watersheds.
Background:
Fish passage projects can have tremendously positive impacts on both individual species and ecosystem-wide processes. Unfortunately, Efforts to improve passage of aquatic organisms is primarily limited by the quantity and quality of data available. The primary objective of the project is to inventory the location, status, and current impacts of in-stream structures and barriers to fish passage within the St. Joe River and North Fork Coeur d’Alene River watersheds.

Benefits:
This project will provide foundational information to reconnect streams and mitigate disruptions in fish passage and aquatic ecosystem processes, such as nutrient cycling, sedimentation transportation. While it does not directly remove barriers, it is the crucial first step to strategic planning to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of restoration.
